Medicare Supplements or Medicare Advantage?

The answer to this varies from person to person. Satisfaction depends largely on a customer’s expectations, budget and style of care they prefer.

We find that people who don’t mind paying a premium and who want maximum doctor choice are often good fits for supplements. Also, people who travel frequently or who want to minimize co-pays and co-insurance often prefer this type of coverage as well.

For Medicare Advantage plans, the lower premium options are a very popular feature. For those willing to utilize doctor networks, get referrals, and pay co-pays and co-insurance when they access care, Advantage plans are a nice option. Less up front costs make it more of a towards a pay-as-you-need option. The extra benefits (such as routine dental, vision, and hearing) not covered by Medicare are also very enticing and popular.

Medicare Advantage

A Medicare Advantage Plan is a lower risk, high pay off option:

  • Everything parts A and B cover
  • Many plans cover prescription drugs
  • Many plans cover dental and vision

Medicare Supplements

A Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy can help pay some of the remaining health care costs, like:

Medicare Advantage is a type of private health policy approved by Medicare that is administered by private companies. Medicare Advantage plans combine aspects of Medicare Parts A, B, and D into one plan and usually use a network of providers and hospitals. These plans are most commonly offered as HMOs and PPOs.  The private insurers are accepting all the risk for your care. You must continue paying your Part B premium.

When accessing care, there may be deductibles and co-insurance up to a maximum out-of-pocket amount. Once this maximum is reached, the private insurer is responsible for all hospital and medical costs for the remainder of the year.

Medicare Advantage is very popular with consumers and enrollment is growing rapidly. These are often the plans seen on television and radio commercials offering premium “as low as $0”. The key to customer satisfaction is talking with your Unitus Advisor to make sure that your needs are understood and that your doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies are part of the plan’s network.

Enrollment into Medicare Advantage Plans is tightly regulated. The most common time to make changes is in the fall each year during the Annual Election Period (AEP) which occurs from October 15- December 7th.

Medicare supplements are health insurance policies sold by private insurers that work in conjunction with and help cover the GAPS in Original Medicare. They are also sometimes called “Medigap Plans” or “secondary plans”. You must be entitled to Part A and enrolled in Part B to qualify for a Medicare Supplement plan. These policies have a premium that must be paid in addition to the Part B premium.

NOTE: Medicare supplements do not cover prescription drugs so, unless you have creditable coverage through the VA (or similar) or as part of a retirement package, you will need to add a Part D Prescription drug plan.

Why Do People Choose Medicare Supplements? You get to choose your doctors and hospitals. There are no networks. Referrals are not necessary. Want to see a specialist? Call and make an appointment! Your policy is guaranteed renewable. You cannot be dropped because you are sick. You can predict your costs. Once you pay the premium, it is easy to determine your liability.

How Do They Work? When a Medicare supplement owner receives a medically- approved service or treatment, a claim is filed with Medicare. Medicare will then process the claim and, if approved, pays its share (usually 80%). Once Medicare has paid, the supplement generally pays the remaining costs that would normally be paid by the patient. The amount that is paid depends on the Medicare Supplement Plan.

Still Have Questions About Choosing a Plan?

Do your important physicians participate in any Medicare Advantage plans or do they only accept Original Medicare?

How about peace of mind? Are you a person who will sleep better at night if you have a lower premium and just pay for services as you go? If so, you might be a good candidate for a Medicare Advantage plan. By contrast, if you tend to worry about unexpected expenses, a Medicare Supplement could give you the peace of mind of knowing exactly what medical spending you will incur regardless of your health.

Do you travel out of the area frequently? If so, you might find Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement to be a good fit for you since you can use it for any doctor or hospital in the nation that accepts Medicare.

What is your risk tolerance? If you have a year of heavy health spending, do you have enough savings to spend the possible out-of-pocket maximum that a Medicare Advantage plan might require?

Hospital & Inpatient Care

It all began in 1986 when Multiple Sclerosis Limited (MSL) identified the need for high-quality care services for people living with this chronic disease.

By 1999, MSL recognised the time had come to establish NanoCare as a separate legal entity. A savvy and experienced Board was appointed and we were firmly on the path to growth.

This growth was boosted by a series of acquisitions within the care sector between 2001 and 2008. By then, we had earned a reputation as an experienced and sizeable private care service provider.

In 2010, the purchase and integration of Nationwide Health & Aged Care Services represented a major milestone in our growth as specialist cleaning and laundry services bolstered our business portfolio.

At around the same time, NanoCare partnered with the US-based Healthcare at Home.  In 2013, NanoCare acquired the business. This nurse-led service has provided a safe, high-quality alternative to hospital care for people with cancer and chronic disease.

Today, we are proud to continue our work as a wholly-owned, not-for-profit subsidiary of MSL
